5 Reasons Why Obedience Classes Are A Great Idea

Teaching your dog the basics at home is fantastic. As a matter of fact, it should be required for every dog owner to do so. However, there are some great benefits to shelling out the cash to take your dog (and yourself) to obedience classes.

Here’s 5 good reasons to schedule some training classes this weekend:

1. You will learn how to teach your dog some more advanced commands. “Sit” is a great starting point, but a dog really needs to understand that when you say, “Stay” you actually mean it. In class, both you and your dog will learn how to become reliable and trustworthy partners.
2. The trainer that’s conducting your class will be able to give you pointers regarding your specific situation. How are you supposed to know that the reason your dog won’t heel is because you’re holding the leash all wrong?!
3. Your dog will be able to learn in an environment that is full of distractions. At least in my neck of the woods, dog obedience classes are generally held in busy pet stores. There are about 10 dogs in a class and people shopping all around you. If you can gain the attention of your dog there, you can certainly do it on a quiet walk around your neighborhood.
4. You will be more consistent with your training. There’s nothing like being expected to show the class what you’ve been practicing all week to keep you to your dog training schedule! When you know that you’re going to be put on the spot the next class, chances are you will not get too complacent when it comes to sticking to the schedule.
5. Interacting with like-minded people really is a pretty good time. Okay, maybe that’s not at the top of your list of benefits, but there’s something to be said for getting to know people in a similar situation as yourself. Maybe you can find some new friends by setting up play dates with them and their dogs? Keep your mind open. Proper socialization isn’t just for dogs, you know.
