Insect Stings and Your Dog

Every once in a while, a dog will get into a fight with a bee or wasp and lose.  If that should happen, here’s what to do:

1.  As soon as you notice, cut a raw onion in half and apply it directly to the sting.

2.  After applying the onion, give the dog a dose of benadryl (or generic antihistamine).

3.  It can be quite serious if your dog has swallowed the insect while it’s still alive.  In this case, give your dog a dose of liquid antihistamine (think Benadryl) immediately.  Of course, the dose depends on the size of the dog.  If you are unsure of how much to give, ask your vet.

By the way, if you don’t keep antihistamines on hand, start.  There are so many instances when a quick dose does wonders for your pup.  I give it to my dog when he’s experiencing anxiety, skin problems that cause excessive scratching, etc…
