How To Effectively Clean Your Kennel and Kennel Flooring
While cleaning your dog’s kennel may not be a favourite way to spend your time, it is vitally important if you want to keep your dog not only clean and smelling nice, but healthy too. Dogs do not like to live in filthy environments any more than you do and like humans, a dog left in a dirty environment not only stinks but is more likely to get sick as well.
As far as kennel flooring goes some of the major no-no’s are that you should never allow your dog to sleep just on the dirt and grass. Not only will he be dirty and smelly but also he may get sick, especially if the dog is the type of breed that is sensitive to moisture. Also, you should never allow an outside dog to sleep on a throw rug or blanket outside. It is impossible to keep these clean enough to keep fleas and lice out of them and the fleas and lice will invariably get on your dog.
The two types of flooring that people use for their dog kennel are either cement flooring or portable kennel flooring. Both types are easy enough to clean, which does make life easier for dog owners. With cement flooring, you will need to scrub it down from time to time with some water and Clorox bleach, and then hose it down to rinse the bleach off. However, you will want to be careful with cement flooring if your dog is the type that is sensitive to moisture; cement, believe it or not, absorbs moisture and dampness like you would not believe. Another disadvantage is that it is a bit hard to get all the sides and corners as clean as you may like
For that reason, many people prefer portable kennel flooring for their dog kennels; it can be laid either on the grass or dirt (needless to say, it will kill any grass you lay it on), or you can lay it on top of cement kennel flooring if you already have this. It is very easy to clean as the flooring tiles, no matter what material they are made out of, can be pulled up, scrubbed and rinsed and then put back in without any problems. Kennel flooring is pretty much “do it yourself” as far as putting it down and even taking it off again to clean, which explains why it is a popular option among dog owners.
