How Citronella Spray Bark Collars Work
One of the best ways to train a dog that will just not stop barking is an anti bark collar. There are many stories of dog owners using everything in book and nothing working until they bought one of these devices.
There are three choices to pick from. These methods used are:
- shock
- spray
- ultrasonic
I personally believe that the spray collars are the most humane though I really do not have a problem with any of the collars.
The spray collars uses a substance known as citronella. This is what a lot of bug spray is made from.
Insects hate this stuff and, guess what, dogs hate it too. They cannot stand it.
This collar is able to detect loud barking and when it does it shoots a quick burst of lemon citronella into the dog’s face.
Whatever a dog is doing he or she will quickly stop once they smell this stuff. To them it is positively annoying and their strong sense of smell cannot handle it.
There are a lot of online stores where you can buy these citronella dog collars but if you want to get it right away your local Petco will carry it.
Make sure you purchase extra batteries and citronella cartridges when you purchase the collar. You will need them later on if you keep using it and this will save you an extra trip.
Putting the collar on your dog the right way is crucial. You want to make the collar snug so that the device can detect the bark. It should sit right on his voice box. But you do not want it too tight so that you are choking your dog or making him or her feel uncomfortable.
Also, make certain to take the collar off your dog so that a rash does not appear and comfortable sleeping patterns are not disturbed.
The citronella collar will start to work immediately. You will notice a huge different within the first hour of use!
The reviews of these collars have been great. The biggest complaint was citronella spray getting over the furniture.
Please keep in mind that there are two more types of anti bark collars on the market which work equally effectively. I just found that the spray collar worked for me. My friend is a bigger fan of the shock collar because he says that while it may hurt more it does its job quicker.
No matter which kind your decide to go with a) properly fitting the collar correctly around your dog and b) consistent use are the biggest factors in making it work well.
