A Dog Toy Is Essential, Not Optional

A dog toy is not an optional, fun ”extra”, it’s essential to maintaining the well-being of your favorite pooch.

Here’s why:

  • Dogs need something to gnaw on. For teething puppies, it’s a must. Buy a nylabone or a similar type of rubber chew toy to not only protect your possessions from a chewing puppy, but also to help him to ease the discomfort of the inflamed and sore gums that come with teething. Don’t buy one for every corner of the house, though! A couple should suffice. We don’t want our puppies thinking that anything lying on the floor is fair game! If you want to make your own, it’s easy. Just twist up an old washcloth, wet it and freeze. The cold will ease the pain.
  • If you’ve just introduced a new dog to your home, a dog toy that he’s familiar with will give your new family member some much needed reassurance that he is safe. Or perhaps you can use a new dog toy as a “gift” when picking up an adopted dog from a shelter. It’s definitely a great way to make new dog friends!
  • Another great use for dog toys is a reward during training. A dog that loves to chew will be ecstatic when given a chew toy as a treat for sitting on command. It’s very important, during training, that you use everything in your arsenal to get your dog’s attention. A squeaky toy is great for this purpose.
  • Use toys to stave off boredom. There’s nothing like boredom to bring out the mischievous side of your dog! Fill a “stuffable” like a Kong toy with peanut butter and then freeze it to make the stuffing last for hours. He’ll be so busy licking and chewing that he’ll forget all about your favorite pair of shoes!

Having good, safe dog toys available for your dog is an essential part of caring for him.  They can ease the pain of teething, help you train, keep boredom at bay and help to make him feel a little bit more like a part of the family.  Next time you’re at the dollar store, grabbing a roll of paper towels, pick up a cheap dog toy for your favorite furry friend.  He’ll be eternally grateful. :)
