Dog Health: Heatstroke

In the hot, summer months, leaving your dog exposed to the elements can be deadly.

Heatstroke can occur when your dog has been left in a hot environment without adequate water.

The symptoms of heatstroke are:

  • rapid heart beat
  • very high body temperature
  • rapid breathing/panting
  • in extreme cases, collapse

If your dog shows any signs that he is suffering from heatstroke:

  1. Get him into a cooler area immediately.
  2. Cool the dog down by either placing him in a bath of cool water or by wrapping his body in cold towels.
  3. Feed him ice cubes or very small amounts of water.  Note:  It is very important that you do not give him large amounts of water at this time.
  4. Call your vet.
