Dog Clothing: Are You Taking It Too Far?
Don’t get me wrong. It’s football season and every Saturday (college football) and Sunday (NFL) my baby, Sam wears his favorite team’s colors! Dog clothes are fun. They’re a way of giving your dog a little extra dash of personality. However, you have to know when enough is enough.
The big problem with many a dog lover (myself included) is the humanization of our dogs. We treat our dogs like they’re little 4-legged, furry people. Yes, in some ways they are. They are very special members of our family. They definitely have human characteristics, BUT they are still dogs. And dogs have dog needs that need to be fulfilled. Let’s face it, sometimes your dog just needs to be a dog.
For those of you that own small, maybe even toy breeds: If your dog spends her whole life wearing a dress and riding around in your designer pet carrier, then don’t be surprised when some emotional problems present themselves. That dog never gets to be a dog. It doesn’t play with other dogs. It probably never goes for walks. She’s probably never even allowed to play and get dirty!
The point that I’m trying to make is this: We should pamper and spoil our dogs. My dog loves to wear his football jerseys. He likes a red bandana. But everything in moderation. In the heat of summer, it is almost cruel for us to dress up our dogs and take them out into the hot sun. They’re wearing a jacket over a fur coat?! Talk about torture! There’s a time and place for everything. Dog clothing is fun. Pampering and spoiling is usually well-deserved. But please practice some restraint and sometimes, just let your dog be a dog.
