Dealing With a Dog Allergy
The majority of US homes contain either a cat or dog. Pets can provide companionship, comfort and a sense of security. Choosing the perfect pet becomes increasingly difficult for those with allergies. It is estimated that 10% of US citizens are allergic to animals. With this in mind it is critical that those with allergies know what triggers their symptoms and learn how to minimize the risk of exposure.
Common causes of allergies to dogs
You might be thinking that your pet’s hair is what you’re allergic to, but this is probably not true. Pet hair is not a significant allergen. Their hair however collects dust, pollen and other allergens that are known to trigger allergies in pet owners. Some pet’s do produce more allergens than others the length of the fur is a non-factor. Another myth that needs to be cleared is that there is no non-allergenic breed of animals.
The home is the most common place to find animal allergens. However there are some cases where the sticky dander can be present. These include schools, churches, workplaces and other public areas. These allergens are usually transported here on the clothing of pet owners. Walls and other smooth surfaces that contain pet dander are easily cleaned. However on carpets, rugs, furniture and clothing special cleaning needs to be done or the allergen can stay around for months.
Dog Allergies
Allergies to dogs are less common than those to a cat. However the dog fur is not what triggers your symptoms. The dander that is contained in the dogs fur is what makes you feel miserable. Even a simple lick from the dog can set off the symptoms in some sufferers.
Dogs are known to scratch themselves more often than most pets in the home. It is this reason their dander can be introduced to the air. Maybe your pet is scratching due to the fact that they are allergic to something in your home. Mold is the most common cause of allergies in your pets. It could be the same mold that causing your own allergic reactions.
Controlling Pet Dander
Prior to blaming your beloved pet, make sure that they are the cause of your allergies. The best way to determine if you are suffering from dog allergies is to remove yourself for the affected person from the pet’s environment for approximately 2 weeks.
If the pet is determined to be the cause of your allergic symptoms the best solution is removal of the pet. This could be as easy as finding a good new home for your pet. Just keep in mind that the allergens can remain in your home for up to 6 months.
If removal of the pet is not possible you will have to take additional steps to help reduce the exposure to pet dander. These steps could include extra cleaning of the dog and house. Air purifiers are also a great way to keep allergens out of the air.
